Why it’s important for Dancers to set Goals

Why is it important for dancers to set goals? For teachers and students, it is important to set goals because it gives you a direction. Teachers, it’s important to make sure you are setting goals for your students, yourself, and where you want to see your dance classes go. As we plan goals for ourselves, we should also introduce goal setting to our students.

Dancers who are passionate, dancers who need direction, and dancers who take numerous classes a week should set goals for themselves. This helps them see and understand progression. Goal setting can be a great exercise that you return to a few times a year. Dancers will then be able to see their own progress!! A great tool is this goal setting sheet for dancers to use to write out their goals for the year, month, season whatever you choose.

Take a class to explain progression, steps to reaching goals, and for students to recognize what is important to them. Giving students the chance to be accountable for their growth is a great tool. This tool is not just great for dance class, but for their futures as well.

When students achieve goals be sure to celebrate their accomplishments! Use praise, social media posts, certificates or other various incentives that are part of your studio or school culture.
